Ava’s New Ride

Ava’s new car seat arrived in Alaska yesterday! I went back and forth on whether to pay the extra baggage fee and bring her car seat with us, or just buy a new car seat altogether. With the bag fees starting at $125, I decided it was cheaper and easier to buy new.

I started shopping around and reading reviews on all the different car seats available. I really liked the Graco Smart Seat All-in-One because she could stay in the same seat up to 100 pounds.  I wasn’t so in love with its $299.99 price tag, not including shipping.  After looking around on a few more websites, I found the Graco My Ride 65 convertible car seat.  She can stay in it up to 65 pounds, stay rear-facing up to 40 pounds,  and with a $159.99 price tag, much easier to stomach.

So I started shopping around and checking out the sales.  I wasn’t convinced that ordering online and having it shipped was the best option.  It’s not cheap to ship to Alaska, especially something heavy like a car seat.  I was thinking that I would send Tony to Target or Toys R Us and pick one up.  Yes, there are both Target and Toys R Us in Anchorage.

After the moving sale, I took all of our change to the Coinstar machine to cash it in.  Now, normally I think Coinstar is a total rip off, but they do have a great offer if you are open to a gift card.  If you accept your cash in the form of a gift card (gift card code, actually), they don’t take out any fees.  I took my money in the form of an Amazon.com gift card.  This definitely came in handy for the car seat purchase.

I checked out Amazon, and sure enough, they had the Graco My Ride 65 in stock.  I wasn’t too concerned about the color.  Ava’s current car seat is blue and green.  She was in luck, they had this cute pink and beige model for $139.99.

I was afraid to even look at how much shipping to Alaska before our arrival date was going to cost.  It was my lucky day!  Amazon offered me a free one month trial of Amazon Prime, offering free 2-day shipping.  I graciously accepted and then promptly disabled their ability to charge my debit card the $79 yearly fee in November.  I will take my free trial, but that is all.

So after my free shipping and my gift card from Coinstar, I only spent $113.98 on her new car seat.  Not too bad.  I did look for a coupon code of some sort with no luck.

Tony called me yesterday to let me know it made it.  I’m very relieved.  I was so worried that it wouldn’t show up until the day after we fly in.  One less thing to worry about.

Do you have better luck buying certain items online as opposed to the brick-and-mortar store?
